I awoke to a clanging noise. With no windows, I couldn’t tell if it was day or night. I raised my head and saw an officer rap the bars with his nightstick.

“You got a visitor,” he said with a twisted smile.

I rubbed the sleep from my good eye and raked my hands back through my hair. “Let me guess. Long black hair, green eyes. A real looker.” My eyes met his.

He raised an envious eyebrow. “That’s her.”

“Tell her I’m not home.”

“You’re kidding.”

I stood and glared. “Do I look like I’m kidding?”

He studied me for a moment, then scratched his head. “That all adds up to zero to me.” He turned to leave.

“I’d like to make a phone call.”

“What?” he said with his hand on the doorknob.

“I didn’t get my phone call last night.”

“I’ll see what I can do.”

He returned ten minutes later without a phone. “You have another visitor. Says she’s your mama.”

I stood. “I’ll see her.”

He unlocked the cage and led me to a small, windowless room that looked a lot like the interrogation room where I’d spent a lifetime last night. I sat in one of the two chairs and rested my elbows on the table between them. A camera watched me from the ceiling.

An officer opened the door and let Mama in. “Dillon. What happened?” She hurried to the table and sat down.

“A few of Bradley’s finest tuned me up on the way to the station.”

“You look terrible.”

“You should see the other three guys.” I tried to smile.

“That’s not right. They can’t do that.”

“I’m afraid they can do pretty much whatever they want.”

She reached for my hand.

A warning came from a speaker on the ceiling. “Please do not touch the prisoner. Physical contact is prohibited.”

Mama looked around the room. I pointed to the camera.

“How long will they keep you?”

I leaned forward and lowered my voice. “Call Bill McCutchen and let him know that I’m here. I might need him to bail me out.” I leaned back. “And I need to talk to Mort ASAP. My arraignment is tomorrow morning.”

Mama nodded. “I saw Nicole outside. Did she visit you?”

“She tried.” I leaned forward again. “I don’t want to talk about her. She’s the reason I’m in here.”

“What?” Her eyes widened. “She’s the one who called to tell me you were in trouble.”

She would know. “I said I don’t want to talk about it. You need to stay away from her. She’s poison.”

Mama’s expression gave no indication whether she would heed my warning.
